Madeline Stone joined Monchamp Meldrum LLP as Counsel in 2023, bringing a diverse background in environmental and land use law. Her practice centers on regulatory compliance, the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), and the entitlement process. With experience on both the public and private sides of complex land use projects, Madeline offers clients a well-rounded and strategic perspective.
Before joining the firm, Madeline served as Assistant Counsel at the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, where she advised staff on a variety of legal matters related to permitting, compliance, and rulemaking – including District compliance with CEQA. She fostered communication between regulatory agencies and the regulated community, and led administrative proceedings to address regulatory violations.
Earlier in her career, Madeline worked in-house as Senior Environmental Counsel at the environmental remediation subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum Corporation. There, she negotiated cleanup obligations with state and federal agencies and advised on a wide range of compliance matters. Her experience managing outside counsel gives her a deep appreciation for the importance of trusted legal partners and the value of collaborative, solution-oriented client relationships.
Madeline also practiced at Holland & Knight and Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, where she handled complex regulatory and entitlement matters. She began her legal career as a fellow at Shute Mihaly & Weinberger.
